QUINCE ORCHARD WAS BUILT BY DOERS
When we asked our grandmother why Gary Green and other leaders went through the risk of building a school, hiring a teacher, developing a curriculum, petitioning the county … surely in 1868, 3 years after slavery, there was an easier and safer way.
She said, “The black children of Quince Orchard needed a school, your great-great-grandfather saw that need. He was a doer. And doers do.”
Preserving heritage. Shaping the future. In telling the story of a lost community, we found one. Here are the stories of the people instrumental in keeping the Quince Orchard community alive and well today.
